Mac

In a word, it starts with F and rhymes with a feathered friend.
My PSU decided that the voltage regulators were no longer needed, and decided to remove them from itself,

In doing so, the desktop went to the large scrapheap in the sky, a tad sooner then expected,

So i ended up going to PC world to get a new desktop as i couldnt wait for a new one from dell,

Had a fantastic argument with one of those so called sales people.

After asking for the original OEM disk for windows 7 Home, I was told it no longer comes with any disks and that
everything was built into a recovery partition,

I did explain that i would be removing everything off of the hard disk and would be reinstalling windows
with none of the other junk that is normally pre installed and as i have paid for the operating system
I should at least have a copy of the disk. but alas it fell on to deaf ears,
So i asked for a refund of the said operating system, again falling on to deaf ears.

After pointing out that according to the EULA for windows i am entitled to a refund if i dont install it.
After many a jovial banter i managed to get a manager to supply windows 7 ultimate, so at least that way i would
have a disk.

guess what.

Its an upgrade disk. no a full version, so after waisting 45 mins talking to a tech person who personally should have been in boots the chemists,
I left with a pc with no disks.

My nest problem was trying to get windows 7 to recognize that you can have two network adapters,
one for the internet and one for a home network, and that they can have different ip address.

One being 192.168.1.2 for the home and 192.168.2.57 for the internet.

That has only taken the best part of 7 hours to actually get it up and running,

I thought windows 7 was supposed to be better.
Cant wait to try and get XP back on this machine.
I've never met such an over bloated operating system that dosent allow you to set things up how you want it.

A clean install of this windows came in at 47Gb :o
After turning off the swap disk and hibernation its still 35Gb.

For what?

now the fun begins,
Hopefully the dark disk was not killed when the psu went bang.
If it did, i do have another disk so i can swap over the controller an try and rescure the data.
but thats for monday.

Fingers crossed i can rescue all of my degree stuff  :!

Mac.

Sorry to hear that Mac - what a pain in the proverbial.  There's nothing I hate more than setting up Windows from scratch and re-installing all my applications.  Especially when its forced and unplanned.

I find the policy of not providing an Windows install disk really annoying.

err no.
probably the only thing i diddnt actually back up. :!

Im going to request an extension on monday, when i get the e-mails back.

But in the mean time i'm downloading hyper os 2010 as that allows windows7 & xp,
and im going to see if i can re install my xp backups via hyper os.

Fingers crossed, but im not impressed with this Win7.

just when i though i had the networking sorted out.
it decides that im not allowed to access the internet from my other devices,
even though they are coming from my trusted network.

Mac

Hmmmmm Not funny,
Just downloaded all the latest updates
Installed them all and it's left me
With a non bootable system,
Why do I bother.

Even the recovery and system restore
Won't help.

Mac, it is horrendous what you are going through. i am trying to avert a similar fate, looking at laptops & wondering which is the best before my one suddenly goes down. if you cannot get it sorted, what hope us who are not as knowledgeable as you are with technology   :(

Mac

Ok, answers please.
Network card when set to auto ip is placed in the home
Network group,
But when I assign my own ip address it is changed to public
And windows will not allow me to set the location to home.
I don't want an auto ip address, I need a fixed one,
I also need it assigned to the home location for security
Reasons,

Ps xp won't install on this system so at the moment I'm stuck
With this

mac I have an XP Prof disc. not sure if you can put it on any computer or not.

Microsoft no longer provide a disk for Microsoft Office either - they just provide a scratch card with a number on it. You have to download it from the internet.

Mac

What very little hair I had is now on the floor,

Why does windows decide that the disk id's in the bios 0 & 1
Are the opposite way round?

Win 7 pro installed in ssd (disk 0)
New partition created in disk 1 for another copy of win 7
Win 7 pro is now shown as being on disk 1
Install Hyperos, on to first system,
Hyperos shows win on disk 0
Windows shows it on disk1
Copying over a win 7 to the other disk leaves the system non bootable
Using bootrec to restore mbr & rebuilding the BCD table
Dosent work either.

Any ideas.

Mac

Ps I need a 64bit version of xp to install onto the system
But should I ever get thus in working j can run a virtual 32 bit
Xp inside win 7, but thank you anyway

MarkS

Mac,

I don't know the answer but I really commiserate with you.

Mark

Rocket Pooch

Is it a real or virtual partition?

Mac

They are all real partitions,
The 60g SSD is 8g Primrary no drive letter allocated &
47gb primary drive C.

The 8gb is set up by windows on install not by me

As for the 2tb one,
Same again 8gb by windows install
80gb primary 1.9tb extended & 10*80gb logical the remaining divided in to spare disks
