Good Evening!....Well that's when it seemed like I logged on to enter the forum.
This is getting slower and slower and all we seem to do is log on here (when you eventually get on) that there is a slow response but if you look at the original message it is nearly a year.
Can we not just send the hosting site this as evidence that this service that we are getting is pretty poor. This is the only site this happens on for me and if it was just at home I would be blaming my computer but it is not, and all the other members do not have access to my computer and so it can only be the provider where the problem is.
This thread will soon be the most commented thread on the the forum (it has already flown past the leisure battery thread).
I am also trying to write as much as possible as I am now on here, and so I'm hijacking my own thread but have nothing to hijack it with.
Please Admin, can someone sort this problem.

As many have previously said.........'Rant over'  :!

I tried for 10 solid minutes at 5:30 this morning and then gave up.
Unfortunately I didn't have the traceroute address to hand.
Other websites were behaving quite normally.

RobertM

In a DOS session try:

ping /n 20  forum.orpington-astronomy.org.uk

I'm currently getting a consistent 16-17 ms response time.

But it still took an age (well a minute) to post that reply !

There's a CPU spike every morning around that time. I think it must be when the hosting company does our backup (or other daily tasks), as there's no corresponding spike in Net traffic as far as I can tell.

Tracert might be more informative than ping, assuming your router or broadband provider doesn't drop the packets.

...but now it's responding just fine.

Isn't your own site also on EZPZ? How was it responding at the time?

Yes it is on EZPZ.  I don't know how it was responding.  I'll try that next time it happens.

Thanks. The OAS sites are on Hermes.

On a note to everyone.
Create a text file on your desktop called oastrace right mouse clcik on deskto and select new text file. (See note below)
In that new text file place the following text exactly. (Just copy and paste)

tracert forum.orpington-astronomy.org.uk >forum.txt

once that is done rename the file to oastrace.bat (See note below)
Now every time this forum is slow, just double click on the bat file and it will perform a trace route to here and
dump the contents in to a text file called forum.txt on your desk top.
All you then need to do is to open the file called forum.txt and copy and paste the contents here.

NOTE

If after creating the text file on the desktop you only see the name as OASTRACE DO NOT RENAME IT YET.
You need to see the name as OASTRACE.TXT
its the .txt thats important.
To get the computer to show the file extensions you need to  do the following.
You need to goto your folder and search options (normally you can do this from windows explorer or your control panel)
goto view and untick HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES. (LEAVE IT UNTICKED FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

once you do this you should see the file name change to OASTRACE.TXT
Now you can rename it to OASTRACE.BAT

If you dont you will create the following once you rename it   oastrace.bat.txt the last .txt is hidden as it is a know file type and the file is still a text file and not a batch file.
on another note the following example picture.jpg.exe will look to you like its a picture because you will see picture.jpg the.exe is hidden again a know file type
and as most of you know a .jpg is a picture, so when you click it you expect a picture, but you are really launching a program,
normally a virus thats been sent to you by someone who dosent know.

Thats it.

Every time you run the bat file it will trace the route to the forum and save the contents.

Mac.

Thanks for those. I've added them to the ticket I have open with EZPZ.

(Of course, Murphy's Law applies; the instant I submit a ticket performance returns to normal, so there's nothing for the support folks to see...)

Mac

Dont forget Tony, on the internet, you can search but you cant hide.  :o

Here's the batch file for those who are having problems creating it.

Just save it to your desk top.

:( Mac, in terms that someone like me can understand, what do I do with http://www.macrhon.co.uk/oas/oastrace.bat :o and when?

If you click on it it should download to your pc.
Copy it or save it onto your desktop.
Or somewhere where you can find it quickly.
When the server here is running slowly.
Just double click on the oastrace.bat file.
It will perform an automated trace to the forum server, and save the results in a file on the desktop called forum.txt
All you need to do then is copy over the text file generated on to this post. So Rick can see if where the problem lies.

It saves you having to open a command prompt every time and typing

Tracert http://forum.orpington-astronomy.org.uk/ >sometextfile.txt
