Images keep changing from 16bit to 8 bit

when doing recent processing, i have noticed that all is ok during procedures and then when saved, the tiff has changed to 8 bit.

now i am not sure if this is happening when making  a jpeg copy, 8 bit/jpeg, from the tiff. not  happened before.

has anyone any clues?
It is healthier to be mutton dressed as lamb, than mutton dressed as mutton!
