Just testing the water -  Canon 450D For Sale - One Careful Owner and Well Looked After.

The camera has had the filter on the cmos chip removed.   The copper finger has a temperature sensor on it which is used to control the temperature on the cmos chip.    The cold copper finger is placed on the back of the cmos chip, the other end is connected to a peltier.   When this is switched on, via the controller, one side gets hot and the other gets cold.   Heat sink is on the hot side to take the heat away.   The argon gas is put in the camera box in a very technical way.   Two old bike inner tube valves have been placed on the side of the camera box.   One of the valves is pressed to let air out while the other valve is used to allow the argon gas in.    The argon gas stops the camera from condensing up.

camera has a lock nut fitted with STC thread for an adapter to fit on to a filter wheel with a clear glass filter at camera end to stop the gas from leaking out.

Camera now in camera box

Temperature control box with the arduino controller

Camera now fitted to telescope

And after all that the thing works. HAPPY DAYS!!

why argon and not nitrogen?

there will be a different refractive index for argon compared to nitrogen,

also argon you buy for welding is normally 5% the rest being co2.

also if the nitrogen is dry, which it should be, you wont condense up anyway.

just a thought.

Only because I looked up argon gas on internet, and Halfords sold a bottle for about £13 and so far it works.

Mac

Halfords :o

would never of thought that, what ever next,
maybe they will tell you to fill your car tyres with nitrogen to improve your fuel economy
as opposed to compressed air,

Mac

Halfords sell argon and CO2 for MIG welding
