First attempt imaging Jupiter this evening. Celestron NexImage Solar System Imager. 8" Dobsonian telescope. Taken from Orpington (Southeast London). Drift method of video capture, copied from the SPA lecture video recording on imaging using (unguided) Dobsonians. Processed in Registax (align, limit, stack, wavelets) using the default settings (as I don't know any better!).

Carole

Another well done.

Good capture.

FYI The horizontal banding can be avoided by using 10fps and above (at least on my SPC900 it can).

MarkS

Your first stacked image?

Well done - it's not easy using a Dob for this kind of thing.

Thanks all.

I'm fairly sure it was set to 30 fps as that's what the manual recommended. It certainly was for the Moon earlier - I didn't have the horizontal banding when I did the Moon. Maybe it reset itself. I may try again this evening.

Another go this evening... moving forward. This time 6" Newt on the OAS HEQ5 guided mount. Celestron NexImage CCD with 2XBarlow. Circa 60 seconds of subs processed in Registax (which I'm still finding hit and miss to process).

Carole

Looking even better.  I bet you found is easier on the HEQ5 than the Dobsonian with the drift method.

Too fast a frame rate leads to image compression to get it from the camera to pc down the available USB bandwith, that's a 'feature' of these sorts of webcams as opposed to 'proper' astro ones.

Kenny

Thanks Duncan. Noted. Will experiment with different rates (and all the other settings).

Carole. Yes, much easier with the HEQ5 but I am determined to try and process my drift avi Moon files from the weekend. I will not be beaten! :)
