Hi Mike,

FOV of LXD75 will be a lot larger - I have the 6-inch Newt Reflector which has a focal length of only about 760mm Verses 2000mm on Chris's LX90.

I have had LXD75 for 6 weeks now & still haven't got it to successfully GOTO 'anything' it's been a nightmare...Chris knows the 'Ins & Outs' but suffice to say if it doesn't work the next time I take it out it's going back...! I bought it because I thought it would be easy to find all those faint fuzzies... ha!

Does it get close to the object if you just do a rough polar alignment?

don't ask Mike, I think john got the lemon of the bunch, but hopefully it will be ok now.  anyway that M13 was at prime on the LX90, I have tried the 80:F5 with the eos and to be honest the number of pixels and the actual sky coverage shows the edge distortion on the optics of the telescope, this did not appear on the LX90.  I've yet to fully try the EOS LX90 combo yet because I'm in India and also because the observitory is getting build this month but when its complete I'll be giving it a good old go with autoguiding etc.

I think for wide fields images the EOS is going to be great and for M31, M101 etc, for things like the Owl Nubula or other small objects then I'll use the SAC, having said that I've been reading about, learning and playing with IRIS and talking to the IRIS yahoo group and there's some excellent stuff you can do with the EOS and Canon digital camera way ahead of what I'll get with the SAC and focal reducers.  when I've done the homework I'll do an article in TOAST on these image processing techniques, but it will take a little while to do.

BTW, if its clear I will bring the LX to your place so you can play, just give me a call.

Chris,

Yeah a session at my place would be good. A Friday or Saturday night late one if your up for it - maybe a few others can join in?

I would like to see exactly what the FOV is using my Nikon (should be almost identical to the Canon) on the LX90 as well as the ED80 to give me an idea what kind of F ratio scope to go for (high I reckon as the FOV seems to be huge). Although it is a lot of money, I do like the look of the new 10" Meade RCX400 as you wouldn't need to buy any accessories for the scope with it being all inclusive.

I am on holiday in Cheshire for two weeks so i'll contact you when I get back.
