E-mail addresses @orpington-astronomy.org.uk

Committee members already have e-mail re-direction through the orpington-astronomy.org.uk domain. These are used on the committee page so that their real e-mail addresses don't have to be exposed to the big bad world. It doesn't stop un-welcome e-mail from being sent to them, but it does provide an interception point should un-welcome e-mail become a problem.

Are any other society members interested in having e-mail re-directed this way?

We could perhaps use them on the forum un-qualified. Any forum member would know they needed to add the @orpington-astronomy.org.uk, but random visitors (and automatic address harvesters) wouldn't...

Having lots of problems with spam thru the OAS email address. I dont know how many other people are having this problem but it is getting incessant. Is there any way to change the link so it isnt a proper liink, i.e. break it with a space or something so its invalid but put some reference to it on the page so people can rectify it manually ?

Mike I know it desn't fix the problem but have you tried Mailwasher yet. Especially with broadband you could keep it running all day.

I've only had a few unsolicited e-mails so far (thank goodness) - financial scams from Africa! Presume that these are through my OAS address. I don't have any links elsewhere to me on the www to my knowledge.

There were rather a lot today, maybe a dozen to the various re-directed addresses I receive. Up to three copies of some spams.

I'm quite happy to break the mail links for anyone who wants the link broken. My usual trick is to put a dot in place of the @ and let folks figure out what to fix...

The only really effective solution to spam is good filtering, possibly combined with agressive spam reporting (using somewhere like spamcop.net) if you want to hit back.

Mostly they are either scams from Africa as Sue says or Porn.

I'll mess around with my settings to see if I can filter them.

Scams from Africa seem to be the growth area. The latest incarnation I've seen claims to involve a Zimbabwean farmer's union trying to get huge sums out of the country.

I've broken most of the individual mailto links on the committee page. The role (membership, treasurer, etc.) links, and Greg's are intact for the moment.
