Ahhh, so the alignment doesn't have to be bang on, it's possible to just sight it by eye?

It has to be as accurate as you can get it. Using the setting circles (once you have fully calibrated your mount) is a good method and the best of all is the Drift or Iterative Method's, but I have found, once you get used to imagining a straight line through the 3 points that the Kochab's Clock method is quick and convenient and more than accurate enough for guiding.
