Ok, thanks for the info .

With regards to your software issues it might be worth trying the following:
- First check the webcam driver is up to date. You should be able to find the latest ones on the manufacture website.
- Try updating your avicap32.dll  (which is essentially the windows api for recording avi files from a webcam) with a fresh copy which I uploaded here. That zip file contains the avicap32.dll which needs to be extracted to the C:\WINDOWS\system folder. Before you do that though I would rename the existing avicap32.dll (in C:\WINDOWS\system) to something different like avicap32ORIGINAL.dll just incase something goes wrong and you need to revert back (in which case you would just delete the new version and rename the original file back to avicap32.dll).

Not sure if it will fix that particular error, but its most definitely worth a shot!

Thanks Tom but I am afraid much of that went over my head.  I only bought the Webcam 3 months ago, so surely that must be up to date.  The Software was created some time ago and still available as a download so I can't see any reason why the two should not work together, and why would it work sometimes and not others?  I have heard of others having similar problems, so it might be an idiosyncrasy of this software.  (Your upload would not open BTW).  I think I will have to deal with this on a one to one basis with the laptop and software in front of some-one who knows what they are doing.

I don't think I am in a position to dish out advice, but what I have learnt is that everything has to be at the right setting for it to work.

From what you are saying Carole it definitely sounds like a problem on the software side of things rather than the webcam itself. It could well be due to a corrupt dll (the avicap32.dll thing), but then again as with all these things it could be one of a thousand other reasons! who knows! I would be happy to take a look for you at one of the obs/imaging nights and update the dll with a fresh one to see if that helps, as I said it could be long shot, but nothing bad can come of it, so its worth a go!

I dont think I actually met you properly (forgive me if i did, i lost track of all the names!) at the last meeting, but I was one of the new guys .

In the mean time I hope you can coerce it into working with a bit of TLC and take advantage of the clear-ish skies

No I don't think we met, I think some-one pointed you out but there were a number of new people at the meeting (some of whom had not been on the Forum) so didn't know which ones to choose to speak to.   Plus I had some bits of pressing business to sort out so did not have much time for socialising at the meeting.
