everyday on my desktop I am having a problem, when I click on Google icon, it takes so long that the hourglass goes & it does not get into Google. it is doing it more. it always seems to do it around 10pm. i have to either reboot the box, or do a restart. it has done it a couple of times during today. i thought it was heavy traffic at a certain time, but now doubt it.
has anyone any clues please?
press ctrl Alt Del together and see what is running at 100% as that is hogging all the cpu.
Have you tried any other pages, as i suspect its not google but your browser.
if you are using internet explorer. (noooooo) then click on the cog, and goto internet options,
click on advanced and then click on both the reset buttons.
(Reset) and restore advanced settings,
reboot the pc and have another go.
If its still running slow, i'll post some more things
Mac.
thanks Mac, the astro forums do not come up either. I will try what you said. I was thinking is it is google
Also have you any other PCs, printers etc. running on your network or already connected to the internet ?
When finally getting into Google, the progress circle top left is only half a one. drives me nuts!
QuoteDo you think I should contact Orange my broadband provider?
Probably not, as I think the problem is still on your pc and not anything to do with your internet provider.
have you managed to get anywhere with your internet?
ok do the following.
goto start menu and then click on run. (win xp)
or if you are using win7 / vista click on the search
type in cmd
in the black box that opens type the following
ping www.google.co.uk
you should get results back similar to the following
Pinging www-cctld.l.google.com [173.194.67.94] with 32 bytes of data:

if your internet is healthy then the ping time should be very low..
if it is low, then do the following,
either try another browser, chrome, safari and see if the problem is the same
If not, have a look at getting a program called Hijack this.
you can get it from MajorGeeks.
http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html (http://majorgeeks.com/download3155.html)
Install it, run it, create and save a log file and e-mail me the results,
DONT post the results here, as all your serial numbers will be listed for all your software.
I'lll have a look to see whats running and tell you how to get rid of anything that
seems a bit naughty.
Mac.
