Did not think this would come out too well, but better than I thought. Loads of dew. Lost a lot of subs with drifting, probably all the cables I had trailing, must sort it out

Fay,

That has come out beautifully!  Lots of detail there and faint wispy bits. Shame about the lost subs.

Fay,

I do love your Black and White images, and prefer these to the colour ones, as there always seems to be more detail in these.
Keep up the mono imaging.......even though 'The Sky at Night' won't be to please with you submitting B&W images on their lovely glossy colour pages.  ;)

I think the contract says "Sky at Night will do what Fay tells them to do"  :o

A little noisy, need to look at noise reductions programs. Any suggestions?

Is it calibrated correctly - on closer inspection there look to be black spots where I wouldn't expect; but it's difficult to see from such a small image.

Dithering your subs will reduce noise there are programs like Noise Ninja and Neat Image (both as standalone and PS actions).

Robert
PS. Dew on optics will murder your signal to noise ratio.

Fay

well i could not get high enough to see if there was dew on the scopes. I have done new darks, not sure about them.

How do progs like Neat, know what part of the image to sort out?

They rely on you adjusting the controls to get the best balance.  Generally they both sharpen and noise reduce so it's a balancing game but as always the defaults do a reasonable job.

I'm sure I have my NN activation key around somewhere if you want to give it a try in PS.

Very nice detail, Fay. Makes the case for B&W imaging!

thanks for that Robert, it would be nice. I know why I had trailing stars, the pier had slipped out of polar alignment, Guiding graph was ok, but in the dark, i took evertthing off to try to sort it, as too heavy with that 120 on. Set it all up again & it was still trailing. So put it all away & had another gho. Bit sad, as perfect night.

Thanks Phil. I was not too happy with the image, there is a lot of detail on there, but bad stars & background. I was surprised to get anything & thought I would have to throw all subs away, as I was aware I had a problem last night.
