Photoshop colour space

I've been trying to learn how to use CS3 and even resorted to to using a tutorial thing.
I'm about to restart section 1 again (see if anything will sink in this time) but something is nagging me.

When I set CS3 up the first time, the recommendation was to use Adobe RGB (1998).
As you can guess, this means nothing to me - But I've been thinking that 1998 is over 10 years ago, did I make a wrong choice following the recommendations.

What would be the ideal setting - would it make a difference anyway ?

It's only a minor thing compared with the other stuff I'm trying to understand.

Hi Mick,

The Adobe colour space is fine for Mac's, the date is the year the standard was set.  The colour space determines the number of colours, it determines the gamut available look it up) and is only of use if you are going to professionally print something.

Windows uses SRGB as does the web, so I would use this for proofing and output.
