Thanks Duncan
I'm interested you put a scope on the output of a step down converter and it was clean.  Have been using a 12-5V converters for a pi and for a usb powered hub quite successfully but wasn't sure if they were clean. Haven't got a current meter on the supply; so no idea how close to its maximum it's running.  But you know how it is; you just keep slapping another camera or focuser on the system until suddenly you start losing connection when it slews.
What's the ripple on the brick like?

Swapped telescopes for armchair.

The Thing

The brick is not bad, some of my others e.g. the on that came with the 12v usb3 hub are very notchy. I want to get a higher voltage brick as that will keep the input to the stepdown converter steadier as loads vary. I have a 19v one also Tosh, but need to use the oscilloscope to check the output.
