The Thing

A better Jupiter. There was variable clouds streamers blowing over and the exposure varied so much the AutoHistogram function in FireCapture couldn't keep up. In Autostakkert2! I have used a Master Dark, horizontal and vertical pre-blurring at 1.0, Variable Transparency Recovery, Discard Global Frames set at around 1/3 of the frames, stack 50% of the remaining frames with 17x85px Alignment Points and using Close to Edge (min Bright 75) and the 'Place AP grid' button.

Registax was used for cropping the staking border, wavelet sharpening, gamma curve correction and colour balancing.

All sounds very technical but its really a matter of trial and error as each iteration of processing takes about 60 seconds :) Not like deep sky images which take forever and a day to process.

umm Jupiter's backside....

Nice image Dunc with some good details given the conditions. Does look a little over processed though - looks like you have cut & pasted onto a background because of the dark ring around edge etc. I preferred your other image with the GRS - was a lot more 'natural' looking..

Cheers, John

The Thing

Hi John,

I've tried to bring up more detail hence the overprocessed look. The dark ring is omnipresent but wacking up the contrast makes it more apparent, also I suspect your screen is making it more obvious than on either of my monitors (LED and LCD ones). Maybe I should have used the de-ringing facility in Registax...
