Astronomy talks at Royal Institution

Apologies for the impersonal nature of this email, but we have an announcement that we believe will be of great interest to your society membership.

At 7pm on Tuesday 24th February The Royal Institution is hosting a talk by Dr. Lewis Dartnell on the new science of astrobiology, entitled 'The Search for Life Beyond Earth'.

Dr. Dartnell is a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society and astrobiology researcher at University College London, focusing on the possibility of life on Mars, as well as an accomplished science journalist. His popular science book on the subject, 'Life in the Universe: A Beginner's Guide', was published in 2007 to critical acclaim.



At 7pm on Wednesday 4th March the Royal Institution, in association with the National Centre for Earth Observation, entitled 'Watching the Earth from space'.

Four speakers will explore where developments in Earth Observations have revolutionised our understanding of global scale processes. These include:

Counting carbon: monitoring the global carbon cycle to understand how living things interact with our climate (Prof Shaun Quegan)
The big thaw: measuring the loss of our disappearing polar ice caps (Dr Seymour Laxon)
Tales of the sea: charting changes in sea level and monitoring the vigour of the ocean heat engine (Prof Keith Haines)
On shaky ground: how satellites can measure small movements in the Earth's crust to help us prepare for earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis (Prof Barry Parsons)


The talk will be held in our world-famous Faraday Lecture theatre, well-known from the RI Christmas Lectures, and promises to be very exciting events. Full details of the talks, and information on booking tickets, is provided on the respective web-links.
