The Flamsteed Astronomy Society's announcement:

"Our second Blackheath observing event of the new season is scheduled to take place this Friday (26th October). The event is planned to begin at 7.30pm. As normal a go / no-go announcement will be made by 5pm on Friday

It looks like (for two events in a row!!) we will have a quality clear sky on Friday evening. If the forecast changes for Friday it is unlikely we will re-schedule for Saturday as snow is already forecast!

The night should hold plenty of interest. For those arriving at the start time, Mars will be due South and will hopefully yield some surface detail. Beginning to set now in the South Western part of the sky will be the Summer Triangle. So while it is still with us there are still many objects within and round it to hold our interest. By around 9.30pm, a 94% illuminated Moon will be observable and the terminator should offer some detailed views. Just above the Moon, M45, The Pleiades is our first indication of the winter constellations about to appear. Although it will not be fully visible at this event, appearing in part toward the end of the night will be our first glimpse of the constellation Orion, signalling that Winter is on its way.

We look forward to seeing of many of you there as possible. Please bring a telescope if you can, the more the merrier! If not, there should be at least three scopes available to take you on a tour of the sky.

Blackheath is quite exposed with the temperature expected to be around 7°C so you are advised to wrap-up warm.

We will meet at our usual spot just north of Talbot Place at 7.30pm. Talbot Place is the first left off Goffers Road after the Tea Hut. Parking is free after 6.30pm."
