Hope you can sort out the joins without too much bother.

I've thought of a way of doing this - on the overlaps I can calculate the background difference between the overlapping images and then apply an offset to one image or the other to reduce that difference to zero.

It's one of the rare occasions I'm actually using Photoshop for an image!
