Title: Double Cluster.... Almost.... :-(
Post by: JohnP on Oct 23, 2008, 10:23:12
This image is from Tues night... I had an early meeting Wed morning so didn't want to image past 10pm so decided to go for a quick cluster rather than a deep Neb.....

Anyway - grabbed 30X2min L's (through CLS) & 5X2mins each RGB - all taken with Atik 16ic through ZS66 using the .8X flattener.. Could have done with a fraction more FOV... :-(

Unbelievably I was packed up & back in doors by 9.45pm... Don't you just love those dark winter nights :-)

Anyway image is here - the trickiest part was trying to keep star colour showing through the L...

No darks or Flats... (I was being lazy)...

Cheers,  John

Good colours John,  I tried M33 that night but couldn't get adequate focus in Ha or Luminance due to the crap seeing.  I may be picky but I think yours is a little soft because of that too.

Nice Robert. Good star colours coming through.

Hi Robert - you may be right - but it also may be down to the way I combined the colour - I used Luminance blend mode but I reduced opacity to 80% to let more of the colour through with the consequence that more of the 'gaussian blur' I applied to the colour channel shows through in the final image...

Anyway just for you I have applied a very small amount of unsharp mask to L layer... hopefully not too much that noise is noticebale...

Is this better?

Cheers,  John

No Probs - I have the same problem myself... :-)

John,

Try adding a luminance correction layer between the RGB and Luminance.  The RGB layer on top and Luminance at the bottom.  Desaturate the luminance correction layer and set it's blend properties to multiply.  RGB layer should be RGB Blend and luminance to luminance.  That should give you a bit more control and better colour saturation - well, it works for me ...

I like it looking soft.

Robert, you put another processing tip somewhere on the forum. Can you remember where it is?

Errr, Yes ... is this some kind of test ?

I may need you to show me this sometime - not sure I am doing it correctly....... Thks

Yes, you'd better. I look forward to it, will bring pen & paper!

Still don't know whether I'll be around on that date but I could prepare something and present it at the next imaging workshop if you like.  At least then I'd have something ready for the day if able to do it.  I would cover how I process from the camera to final image using luminance layering (Ha + RGB).

Would that be useful ?

I think YOU need a break Robert. Today is 24th October - we were talking about the Imaging Workshop on 22nd November !!!!!

Perhaps there is confusion with "Imaging Workshop", November & "Imaging Session" October

WOW! I'm Impressed I don't think ever in ALL my imaging posting have I had 24 responses to one of my pictures.... SHAME ONLY 6 of them relate to the image !!!!!!! :-(

Time to start a new thread me thinks.......

Mike, Fay is right there was confusion between the two.  I meant run through it tonight (Imaging Session 25 on 24th October) then if I was available doing the same thing on 22nd Nov.  I have a long trip coming up to Frankfurt but don't know exactly when that will be yet.  I know you want to sort out the OAS Calendar but if there's time maybe I could do something ?

Fay, sorry couldn't make it due to work commitments.  Image of the Month, I find that difficult to believe after all the great stuff you guys brought back from France and what people have been getting with DSLRs.  Was it the one of Sh2-171 ?

Mike, Could we have a Picture of the Month Section on the OAS web site (or on the Forum) ?

What's all this talk about Skull Buggery !!!

Sure.

No, it was your image of the Iris Nebula. Tricky one to get properly (especially under a full moon) and nicely processed.

The Iris was the image that gave me the most grief of any that I've done so thanks for the recognition, it's much appreciated.

John, sorry for hijacking your thread ...

I've just checked. It's Fay's fault. Time to break out the buttered ferrets!
