Post by: Carole on Sep 28, 2017, 16:17:41
Thought I'd post up the dates early as a reminder.

At the moment the following people have told me they are going:

Carole
Mark
Dave T (Swanley)
Roger (if his sister can look after his dad).

So sign up folks and put the date in your diary.

Pete's reply regarding Battenhurst Road:

QuoteIt's now open. But showing as closed to keep traffic down.

So we won't have to do the detour and can ignore closed signs.

Don't pitch so far over as you did last time Roger please.  Presume you are not stopping Saturday night as POD is booked by Non astro people.

Ray D (SGL) will be coming to DSC for the first time and says while he has all the gear he has no idea....but he is referring to camping not to imaging ha ha!

He has offered to go out and get a take away, so I wondered what every-one thought about that for perhaps Saturday night.  I think Chinese and fish and chips are possibles, but I think he needs to go to only one place as they are each quite a drive in different directions.

So assuming he is OK with this, what are the votes for Chinese, Fish and Chips, Neither.
I will also separately E mail him and Dave T who are not on the Forum, though I think Dave T is currently at SGL star party in Hereford, talk about a glutton for punishment, but maybe he can pick up E Mails.

OMG I didn't know about that.  Need to keep an eye on things over next 24 hours then as no point in going if its going to be really windy and the forecast not great anyway.

I think it's going to be a NO GO in that case, can every-one planning to go keep an eye on this forum and "check in" a) To say you have seen this post and b) Once a decision has been reached.

I will keep in touch with Ray and Dave as they are not on this forum.

Today's update on the weather at Ticehurst on yr.no is:

Friday - partly cloudy until 1am then cloud & rain (up to 4.4 mm) with moderate breeze 6 m/s

Saturday - Rain all day until 7pm then some clear skies until 1am with some cloud but a strong breeze at 12 m/s (I have not learnt all the wind rates but I think 12 m/s is pretty darn strong for our purposes).

Sunday (for those who can stay) - no rain during the daytime and partly cloudy 7pm - 1am and then clear through the rest of the night.  Wind rate 6 m/s

The forecast is changing frequently, at the moment it doesn't look great for those who can only come Friday and Saturday.

We'll make a final decision this evening, can you all make you comments so I know what you are thinking?

If DSC is cancelled and the forecast remains the same I might go down for just the Sunday night.

Roger has spotted that Thursday 26th and Friday 27th are clear and no wind or rain, so might be worth considering postponing to the following week, the first quarter Moon sets early, so also let me know your thoughts on that.

Obviously we need to see Saturday's forecast as well and it could change, but might be a possibility.

Well it seems to me that it would be foolish to go this weekend.  I think we should cancel, does every-one agree?

I am however currently planning to go Thursday and Friday of next week if the forecast stays the same, but that won't suit those who have to work.  I don't yet know the forecast for the Saturday, but I have something on on Saturday evening, but it might suit every-one to shift to next weekend.  There will be a first quarter Moon but it sets well before midnight.

 :( :(

Such a shame as it would have been the first for a group of us for quite some time.

Roger and I have pencilled in 17 - 19th November for an UDSC, but not holding my breath.

Looking at the weather, we did the right thing cancelling this weekend.

https://www.yr.no/place/United_Kingdom/England/Ticehurst/

Sorry about that Mark, well the new calendars are on sale now with the dates for 2018, so please every-one put them in the calendar and try to reserve them.  There are 5 official DSCs in 2018.

There is also an extra date on Saturday 16th June at Noel's Farm near Meopham which is primarily an imaging session, but then it developed into an afternoon Starbecue and we can stay overnight if we are imaging.  Obviously sunset will be late, and Noel doesn't have facilities for more than a couple of people using electricity, so you might have to be electrically independent and will need some sort of overnight portaloo as the loo will be in the house which I don't think will be open all night.
