Title: Zip files
Post by: mickw on Dec 21, 2012, 08:23:11
I have a folder that I zipped/compressed but can't remember what program I used

I've tried unzipping with Jzip and Peazip but without success, although Peazip did extract the folder but only unzipped some files as 0 byte

Anybody know of a universal Zip program that would extract anything ?
I don't really want to install and uninstall every zip program that's out there.

Cheers

Oh I cant really send a sample for a trial - the folder is 9 gig

Have you got WINZIP?

Use 7Zip. It will uncompressed anything.

As Mike said, 7zip is very good. Also winrar usually works.

OK thanks for that, Winzip didn't work, 7Zip does - nearly   :(

7Zip appears to be unzipping one sub folder at the moment but giving "unsupported compression method" on the rest  :o

The top folder and all contents were all zipped at the same time time so I can't figure out what's going on.
The countdown reckons another 5 hours to completion, so I'll leave it ticking away and see what I actually get.
I would have expected a "file corruption" message if that was the case.

I hope you haven't lost all the astrophotography you've done this year ...

Yes, all of them - I'll have nothing to reprocess over Christmas

hmm, zip is pretty much stable (and has been for years) sounds like you might have a corrupt archive. Have you tried a repair? (copy the zip file first and work on the copy)

Good point Ian although one small snag - I don't recall repairing a file let alone a zipped file

Edit
I suppose the next question is how and what with ?

Zip utilities have a "repair corrupt archive" option. Usually. Do it on a copy of the zip...

No option to repair in Jzip or 7zip, Winzip won't even touch the archive
