Is it a "new" router or just a different one ?
Might be that it is only wireless G not N (N has more power and range)
A different one

it seems to be an N
That should be OK, Have you put the router in a different position, like behind something that would block the signal.
Your laptop might be "seeing" someone else's network and obviously not synching with it.
Try synching next to the router and then try moving away gradually until signal lost - keep using the network/internet as you do.
I will try that, but it is ok downstairs but not when i go into the garage & garden. cracks me up, always a problem!! the router sorted the problem of my connections going down 10 times a day, especially at night, and I thought all was well, but may not have had the laptops outside since I put it in, cant remember.
