You figured it out, more or less, in the end. :)

The IMG tag needs an image file (usually with a .gif, .jpg or .png suffix).
The URL tag takes a link to another page.
If you're combining them then they need to be nicely nested: URL IMG /IMG /URL

The little "Modify" link you should see on your posts will allow you to go back and fix something in a post that's not working properly...

The "Preview" button can also be useful there to show you whether things are working before you hit "Post"; good for trial-and-error. ;)
