Wow!  A rare post from Paul.

Looks like an interesting object - but I reckon it could do with a few more exposures.  1 minute subs?  You weren't guiding?

What is the cause of those diffraction-like spikes?

Mark

Hi Mark,
Having some problems with my guiding on Saturday, so down to one minute subs, then the sky was getting light so had to call it a day. Will have another go one it starts to rise a little earlier ;-). The difraction spike are caused by the clasps holding the lens in place.

is the top right hand side supposed to be that devoid of stars?

Yep, it's a dark nebula LDN1470 AKA Bernard 3 and 4.

I've not heard of that one before but it looks very interesting, especially with the associated dark nebula B3 and B4.

That's a good image for 1 minute unfiltered subs, an LP filter and guiding should improve things considerably.
