Title: M1 - The Crab Nebula
Post by: MarkS on Nov 22, 2008, 02:04:04
Crab Nebula taken from Sidcup before the clouds rolled in.

22 x 5 min with modified Canon EOS 350D on Celestron C11 with F6.3 focal reducer.  Astonomik CLS filter + IR filter.
Guiding with 300mm lens with x2 converter + modified Toucam.
Scaled down by 2/3 and then cropped.

There was a bit too much wind and the seeing was poor but I'm still quite pleased with the result.  Ambient temperature 4C.

Here is the one I took this time last year at the December Deep Sky Camp:

What a difference in a year!  The main differences are two-fold:
1)  The camera is now modified (letting through more H-alpha)
2)  Guiding means I can take 5min exposures instead of the previous 30sec unguided exposures.

I like that very much, Mark, lots of depth.

So many subjects on the horizon, for us, if the weather would improve!

That's really excellent Mark - good depth and detail, it looks almost 3d.  Could you do me a favour and bring your guide camera an lens in for me to look at, I'm looking at using something much smaller than the ED80 for guiding my refractor.

Fay - don't take all those drugs, keep some for me .... please !

I agree with Robert, looks very 3d, lovely definition, I was suprised this object was a lot tougher to image than I expected but you've captured it beautifully.

Excellent job!

Mark - Excellent... Such an improvement... You are seriously making me think of tackling modifying my EOS300D... You get such great results...

The stars look slightly overblown but it is a really nice image.
