Title: partial solar eclipse
Post by: Sallyvardon on Oct 03, 2005, 19:08:48
Wasn't it a fantastic morning for viewing the eclipse this morning. I have a solarscope and I bought some solar viewers from the BAA and took them into my daughters primary school and spent the entire morning listening the the kids gasps of amazement by the big chunk missing from the sun! Even the teachers were impressed!
Although it didn't go as dark as 1999 it did get very chilly at about 10am.
I really must get round to seeing a total eclipse! :D

Hi Sally,

That's really cool.... I keep on meaning to make the effort myself & do something similar but never seem to be organized enough! I almost did it for the Transit of Venus in 2004 & thought about it again today..... I bet the kids absolutely loved it.

John.

The Transit of Venus was a great day. It was quite eerie I thought this morning. Although it wasn't a total eclipse, the sunlight was still muted and everything was lit in a strange light, it was hard to explain.

I have never seen a total eclipse and would love to. Well theres many more to come so i'm sure i'll get to see one one day.

Some of the children asked me if there was going to be another one today!
What a shame it doesn't happen a little more often.

Glad to hear about your school visit. Have you thought about going in to show the kids  sunspots (though don't think there is much activity at the moment)? I went in several times with my telescope when my boys were at primary school. If you can do it in the morning with a waning moon there would be added interest! In my experience teachers are generally very keen to have people in support the key stage 2 science curriculum.
