I decided to take my DSLR out to have a go at imaging the penumbral eclipse. Initially there were clear skies and the moon seemed extraordinarily large and bright though it was near the horizon (optical illussion). By the time I had grabbed my camera and tripod it was heavily overcast. It's was also more than half an hour beyond the maximum but both visually, and as you will see below, photographically there is no sign of a penumbral shadow. One of the Reading Astro people at Saturday night's monthly members meeting did come up with a rather credible explanation as to why the Moon might be brighter rather than having a shadow on it but I couldn't recount it here.

This is one of the astronomical events which I think is overrated along with the meteor showers. Lots of excited for very little.
