Whenever I try anything like this shot the Moon is always a mess!

Agreed, very nice, in focus and well exposed too. I take it this wasn't with a phone camera ?

Robert it was with a Nikon D7000. Stock kit lens so focus isn't as sharp as it would be with a quality lens.
