Title: Rosette from Riberac
Post by: MarkS on Nov 24, 2009, 22:06:36
Rosette Nebula last Thursday night at Riberac.

30 x 5min exposures
H-alpha modified Canon EOS 350D on Skywatcher ED80 with WO MkII 0.8x reducer giving 480mm focal length.
No filters used (except for IR/UV filter).

Sky was very moisture laden which made the background level brighter and noisier than usual.

was this the same night you had the condensation problem?

Yes - but this image was taken with the uncooled Canon.

That's an excellent result Mark, especially as the conditions were really bad for most of that evening.

Thanks Fay.

Yes, darks and flats as well, I always apply darks and flats.

I also shot a few more hours of M31 an a few more hours of M45 - I'll add the data onto my exisiting Andromeda and Pleiades images.  These are both medium term projects and I want to add even more at December UDSC.

Mark - Superb as usual - you really are the king of the DSLR....

I love the star colours - a great result - was this taken during the 11 hour session.....

Anyone can do it - get one, mod it and do the same!

Yep, along with a few more hours of M31 an a few more hours of M45 ...

Very nice Mark, must do that one day.

Fabulous image mark, one of my favourite subjects.

What was the outcome of using your Cooled DSLR, as this worked OK without, but you seemed to have trouble icing up at other times?

i.e. Was the Peltier DSLR a success or otherwise?

Too early to be 100% certain.
It certainly reduces thermal noise to very low levels but it might need careful handling or further modifications to prevent dew/ice.

But I'm very hopeful ...

Mark, what capture program do you use for DSLR bulb?

I forget. I'll have to check when I get home.  On my camera I control the shutter via the remote control jack (not the digital jack) because the 350D only allows 30sec exposures via the digital lead.

Try this:

Will have a look Mark, but rings a bell it does not work with DSUSB Shoestring guider

Also from Stark Labs -
Nebulosity
http://www.stark-labs.com/nebulosity.html (http://www.stark-labs.com/nebulosity.html)

That works with the bulb setting on the 350D and the 400D with LX adapter (same as shoestring I think)

They also do PHD guiding

I always use PhD for guiding.  For this Rosette I tried using Nebulosity to control the shutter and download the images (this most recent version will also write to the CF card as well).  The reason I was using Nebulosity was that it should sync with PhD and do dithering between exposures (previously I "manually" dithered by moving the guidestar slightly between exposures).

It also has a good tool for helping to focus the DSLR.

Well it did sync with PhD but completely failed to do any dithering.  I was lucky the Rosette came out as well as it did.  My M31 had to be consigned to the scrapheap because lack of dithering meant I had residual banding throughout the image.

Moral of the story - my back garden is the place to experiment with new software - instead of wasting premium dark sky time.

Mark, I meant it goes not work with GPUSB, what I have, ok with DSUSB

Before my abortive attempt at using Nebulosity.

I use a stand alone shutter control program Shutter.exe via the serial port
I use PhD to do the guiding via the Shoestring GPUSB
I use Canon EOS Utility to download the image automatically into a folder (it's also saved to the camera's CF card)
I use RawShooter to examine the downloaded RAWs

A complete mishmash as you can see!
