Is it me or is the site very slow?
I noticed it was dragging it's heals quite a bit yesterday, thought the site was down at first. Seems alright today though...
Site has seemed ok today so it must be you
It's been terribly slow at times off and on for the last week or so. it can take up to 60 seconds to respond after clicking the "Post" button.
I've had similar slowness from quite a few of the websites I visit recently. It's quite hard to tell where the slowness is caused. Sometimes it's obviously relatively local to me (everything goes slow at the same time) and sometimes it's less clear (some things slow, others not)...
If folks can log exact times they notice severe slowness from the OAS sites maybe we'll be able to spot a pattern...

True for me also - it's not just the O.A.S. site.
What ISPs are you all on? Maybe it's that?
Weirdly whilst sending the above reply the site suddenly went very slow. I then got the following error message:
Database Error: MySQL server has gone away
File: /home/orpastro/public_html/forum/Sources/Subs-Post.php
Line: 1464Database Error: MySQL server has gone away

What ISP are you on Mike? Maybe it's that? :cheesy:
I'm on BT and it keeps going slow or failing
Rick,
This has been running slow for the last 5-10 minute (11.15am) when posting and when browsing.
Tony G
That last message took 26 seconds to post.
Tony G
That one took 44 seconds...........I'm not doing this task no more, my boss is getting suspicious. :-?
Tony G
Its very slow. I'm using my mobile on EE. Other sites are fine.

:D Virgin Media at the moment. Sky 40Mb fibre service in 6 days \o/ 8)
11:15 onwards
BT internet - lucky to get 2 meg
40 -65 secs to get into or anywhere on the forum
Clicked on Mikes APOD link and leaving the forum the speed was normal
11:27
OK so it's making me out to be a liar - all OK now
I got this message when attempting to post at 20:54 today:
"Connection Problems
Sorry, SMF was unable to connect to the database. This may be caused by the server being busy. Please try again later."
The hosting company have just emailed to say they'll be rebooting the server our sites live on "in order to resolve performance and stability issues" around midnight tonight...
Update: The reboot has completed. The server is rebuilding the RAID after one drive fell out of sync, this may take a few hours to complete and will affect performance.
Website was down with 501 errors this morning.
What time? My nightly backup also had problems, but came to life half-way through.
Noticed it at approx 6.30am
Bloody nora ....it`s still slow. Takes about 30 seconds to one minute to load the site and the various bitz on the Forum. C`mon, you clever people who can mend it .... mend it !!!!!!!! :police:
Doug.
Most of the time it seems fine, which is why catching it when it's slow and trying to figure out why is complicated, which is why I'm interested in when it was slow, preferably with precision better than +/- 5 minutes...
It`s slow now....... 09.30 - 10.00 hrs Monday 11th March 2013. It will probably be slow all the time now ....... bloody nora ...... hopeless ......
Still dragging it's heels..............
Tony G
:! Again very slow this morning from about 5.35am onwards (this is about the time I logged on)

This message came up after I was trying to post the previous message on this thread.
Tony G
tried to log on tonight and got 500 internal server error,
this was 01:04.
Frequent but intermittent very sluggish (30 seconds or slower) response from forum and main website 07:50 to now...
"503 Service Unavailable " message at 08:21
Hosting company's support site also sluggish. Other sites elsewhere not affected.
Response times in excess of 20 seconds most of the time between 10:05 and 10:15 this morning. All parts of OAS site affected. Support ticket updated...
It's definitely server end. I'm on BT's Infinity broadband... superfast. Still getting slow response this morning. Other websites working fine.
Intermittent occasions when OAS sites took 30 seconds or more to respond today. Certainly server side. Hosting company say they're monitoring it. I expect the tricky bit is catching it when it's being sluggish long enough to see why.
Hi Rick,
I pointed one of our tools from work at it and its not doing a lot better than 27 seconds upto 59 and timing out.
If you go here https://www.pingdom.com/ you can setup a free monitoring tool which will send you stats on the speed. We use it at work, its pretty good. If you go to the tools section you can try the site from different locations and see whats happening, its all server side wait issues.
Chris
On intermittent occasions the wait time is less than 30 seconds ...
For an hour or more around midnight last night the site was essentially inaccessible. One of the draw-backs of a shared hosting service is that activity on other sites on the same shared server (or server farm) can affect us. I'm pretty sure this is what's happening at the moment. A site on the shared server is the target of an attack...

Would it also depend if the other sites on this server were sites that were visited very, very frequently, if you know what mean. :-?
Tony G
Yeah, that would be a problem... :wall: :flame:
...an email:
Dear Orpington Astronomical Society
At midnight tonight we will performing some changes to your server to resolve the recent performance issues.
The problem has been tracked down to the way MySQL performs on SSDs. At midnight tonight we will be making some changes to the version of MySQL run on this server, however this will involve around 1 hour downtime on the MySQL service while PHP is rebuilt.
We apologise for the recent issues on this server but these changes should bring it back to normal performance levels.
Regards
EZPZ Hosting
Well now that I have finely got onto the website .....let alone to the thread I actually wanted to read, is anything going to happen with the server, as every minute is precious to me and the time it is now taking to get onto this site, I will never get back. :!
Tony G (disgruntled)
PS........Let's just hope that this doesn't time me out before it's posted.

Certainly been slow at times today, but other sites have suffered likewise here... :/
Painfully slow to use right now (10:04 Tuesday 2nd April)
10:40 am 3rd April - Pages taking up to and beyond 30 seconds to load.
For Gawd`s sake ......... somebody get it sorted.
Times and numbers are useful. Thanks, Mike. :)

Mac.
Time - Now as stamp
Speed or lack of is dire.
Is it time to check out a new host ?
I don't recall it being this bad ever ?
I've not posted it three times, although it may look like it,
It seems that although it told me it had timed out, it looks like it has taken the posts.
So the time logs for the previous three entries, should be exact., if that makes sense.

Thanks, folks. Reports passed on. The database errors may be a different problem... :unwell:
...and apparently
QuoteThere are continual known issues with this server. We're bringing up another server within the next couple of days to transfer everything across to as it looks to be an underlying hardware issue.
Fingers crossed then. :boom:
Aye... :unwell: :radiation:
Very slow today and yesterday.
Keep typing posts which time out, then I try to post them again and I get told some-one has posted while I was typing etc etc and when I look it's my post posted after all.
It is now 10.39am Sunday 7th.
Carole
Waiting to see whether promised server change makes any difference... :bug: :unwell: :flame:
I've had that quite a few times.
I've also had a lot of times I've tried to post but it has taken so long or thrown up an error and in the end I just don't bother. It's really irritating.
I'm hoping that the hosts are working on or replacing the servers, otherwise there's yet another reason that the connection times or failure to connect is sh1t.
Time for a new host I think :!
Could not even get the website today at 18.56
Carole
This isn't me, as I couldn't get on here to start with. :-?
(Not) Tony G
I gave up completely this evening,
I was trying from about 18:30 onwards, cant be more exact then that, and i wasn't even connecting or getting any errors,
and the rest of the internet was working correctly.
Mac.
Well today has been pretty speedy - until now 16:35
I give up
Blimey speedy at moment on my mobile. 8.26pm on 23/4/13.
