OK, I had another attempt at "imaging" with the ETX.
First batch was taken with Sony Alpha 10mp DSLR attached with T ring to rear of ETX.  Each time focus looked to be really sharp in viewfinder plus tried various exposures, they all came out a bit blurred to varying degrees either out of focus or possibly motion blurred.  I was using a (wooden) wedge and a weight to try and make the setup more rigid which worked better than my first attempt.
Out of curiosity I poked a Nikon Coolpix 4500 4mp compact against the eyepiece in full auto - 100% better  :(
I don't think an SLR hanging off the back of an ETX via a 4" adapter tube is ever going to work - unless I weld up the fork mount
I guess it's time to concentrate on the webcam.....................
