Hi, its closed for Feb!

SEE..............
That's what happens when people go bonkers at Astrofest
DOH!
I'll find out if Woodlands is open.
I think Stairs Farm (which we haven't tried yet) might also be shut, but if Woodlands is shut as well I'll find out.
Carole
So we've finally discovered which month it closes!
QuoteSo we've finally discovered which month it closes!
:cheesy:
Amazing the powers of deduction. :D
And nobody had to write a letter or anything :o
So it closes one month a year?????
Perhaps it is a serious state of quagmire!!
Just got this reply from Woodlands.
QuoteHi Carole, sorry not open until March
Assuming I got the right Woodlands TENTERDEN ROAD, BIDDENDEN, KENT TN27 8BT as there are several on the web.
Stairs Farm is open from Wednesday 17th, they have 3 caravans and 1 tent already booked and have space for 2 hard standings and 10 - 12 tents (approx 5 hook ups available).
If you want to give it a try in the absence of the other places, the contact is Jackie: 01689 850 644
Carole
In that case, unless we can find another site it is off.
Where is Stairs Farm?
It's at Hartfield, it is the one I went to view and thought it a potential site. There are photos on the Gallery under events/DSC. It was pretty dark there, has some hooks up, some hard standing, a gravel road into the field, a shower and toilet, a nearby but only dimly lit village with a pub. Look on Mark's dark sky website, it's in one of the dark areas which he has pinpointed. It's on the edge of Ashdown Forest.

However you can't just turn up, you will need to book. I am sure she would be happy with a reasonably late booking if people are unsure.
An opportunity to try it out.
Ignore the stuff about Camping and Caravan club, we've already discussed that with her.
Carole
so whats the crack at the moment.?
The site looks ok.

Looks good. Only 45 mins from Orpington too. Looks very small though. Not sure they'd have enough room for us all.

Or was that one seasonal as well?
I think Chris has been to that one before.

You mean Romney Farm - doesn't open 'til Easter.
Nor does Norwood Farm - the one I spent a night at (but very brightly lit toilet block).
Tuesnoad I'd be very happy with (very dark!).
Stairs Farm certainly worth a try.

Excellent news. If they're forecasting snow we'll probably get crystal clear nights instead!
QuoteNot sure they'd have enough room for us all.
There is plenty of room for us all, but even if there wasn't there is an adjacent field we can also use, but there is no hardstanding, or hook up in the next field.
I really think we should give Stairs Farm a try, it's dark, not too far and has everything we need, and because it's not huge, we won't get hoards of noisy light polluting public as our neighbours.
There is no point in people like me, Doug and Rose going to suss these places out if we're not even going to give them a try.
Carole
Well if they reply to my email and say they can accommodate us next weekend then we will go.

It's worth considering when is the most appropriate time to check sites out. Off season facilities may not be clean, access might be difficult and so on. Stairs Farm will still be there in the summer, even if we don't go this weekend.
QuoteStairs Farm will still be there in the summer, even if we don't go this weekend
But as the other sites are either closed or going to be a quagmire, it does seem a shame to cancel DSC or try out other places that are also unknown.
This at least has a new shower, I can't imagine they would let the facilities be unclean, and a hardcore entrance to the field with some hard standing for caravans and campers and no sheep poo.

We have extension leads.
I think the one at blacklands was 100m+
I do believe Mr G still has a huge length. (Comments as you see fit) ;)
so power wont be a problem as such.
Mac.
I rang and spoke to the owner as soon as I heard from Woodlands yesterday, and as said in a previous post there were spaces for 2 hardstanding and 12 tents (plus overflow into next field), but how often do we have that many tents, although we will want to leave space in the middle for the scopes etc with 5 hook ups available.
However as Mike is in charge of DSC he needs to confirm the arrangements. She said she would trust us to collect the money from those who came and pay her afterwards (which was a concession I negotiated with her) but I think we have to make some sort of booking with her beforehand (i.e. an approximate idea of how many will be going).
So what I am saying is, there was definitely space yesterday. Mike you might do better ringing her as she hasn't responded that quickly to E Mails to me in the past. The phone number is on the website.
Sorry about the lack of sheep Tony.
QuoteWherever we go will be a quagmire
Yes the grass will be boggy wherever we go, but at least this has a gravel path to get into the field, and several gravels paths crossing it:

Well i'm game. I'll post a vote so we can get an idea of numbers.

Mike are you going to do a block booking?
Depending on the poll.
Mike don't forget we'll need to get the Padlock code off Jackie (the owner) to be able to get in.
Carole
Mac,
Did you want me to bring that drum of cable next week, but someone needs to supply the plugs, or you could make up a couple, as there is 100m, and the colour matches Mark's new scope.

Quote from: Mac on Feb 14, 2010, 16:01:45Mike are you going to do a block booking?
There are 9 definite yes's in the Poll so I will call tomorrow and book us in. I am presuming out of that 9 that 7 are tents, 1 caravan (Chris) and 1 mobile home (Mick) ?
sounds right Mike
Interesting, but we're a bit late:

The sale says year 2008
Jackie and her husband told me they were new owners, so I guess they were the ones that bought it. They are still "feeling their way", but had a new shower installed and put the gravel roads in, so I guess they have done a fair bit to bring it up to scratch. This was also why they were a bit unsure about the rules and regulations regarding the Caravan and camping club, but Doug put her right on that.
Carole
Mike, if you get this in time, can you book me in for a Hook up please.
Let me know if you didn't get this in time and I'll book it myself.
So with the Caravan and Camper (who will both want hook up I presume) and myself, that should leave a couple more to spare.
Thanks
Carole
hookup if poosible, only if they are not isolated from everyone else
Fay,
Patsy the Patrol, is my new old 4x4 :-) I picked it up yesterday and I'm going to get it cleaned today, its 2 years older than the caravan at 1992 and runs on LPG, so technically I have an environmentally freindly car.
I don't care about mud anymore, this thing could run over a goat and you would not know it.
Chris
P.S. More Patsy info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patsy_(Monty_Python)
The hooks ups are round the edge Fay.
Mike, one more thought. I did mention to Jackie about having a communal tent and whether we could have this at a reduced rate. I can't remember what was decided, but it might have been something like half price. With the current weather I think we would be glad of the communal tent. Maybe the fees that the "day trippers" pay could cover that, or we all put £1 per night each in the pot to cover it.
Just a thought.
Carole
Just need to buy one, store it then transport it then ;)
I keep ring that campsites number but just keep getting a message "Sorry there is a fault. Please try again".
OK finally got through. We are booked in and hook-ups arranged. It is £9 per night and £3.50 for electric.
Please bring CASH at the weekend. No cash - no entry - simple as that.
I will be provided with the padlock code on Thursday.
ok Mike/Carole, thanks sorting it, I'll get a tipple for you to drink :-)
I assume we have seen the weather forecasts (http://www.animated-gifs.eu/emoticons-weather/0012.gif)
Do you think Blacklands would lend us their Ark
Thanks Mike & Carole
Mike can i reserve a hook up please for three nights.
So i'll owe you £37.50.
Mac.
Don't worry about the weather, its going to be a great weekend, just need a floatation device and warm coat for Frodo!
i am thinking of borrowing what Frodo has already!
Can I book one of the hook-up(if there are any left), and I don't mind if someone wants to run some extension leads from mine to there tents, as I'll be there from Friday afternoon until Monday. It's just that I don't want to get down there on Friday and take a hook-up, and then someone comes down later and says that the one I'm using is their one and all that!
If it's a problem, then if possible I'll ask Chris to run a lead from the 'Pikey 2000'
Tony G
you can share my one if you want Tony
All the available hook-ups for tents are taken apparently. Only ones for hard standing (caravans) left.
Tony, don't Hilti have a tool for getting tent pegs into concrete?
QuoteAll the available hook-ups for tents are taken apparently. Only ones for hard standing (caravans) left.
Mr G, we need your length ;)
QuoteAll the available hook-ups for tents are taken apparently
Do you mean all the tent hook ups were taken prior to you ringing?
Or do you mean some of us have taken up what was left and there are no more left (does that make sense ?). Only Jackie told me on Saturday there were 5 hooks ups available. Chris and Mick take 2 (as hard standing take priority), so there should be 3 more.
Me, Fay and Mac I think were the first 3 to speak up.
Unless of course she's had other bookings since I spoke to her.
I just hope now the place lives up to expectations. You can't be 100% sure until you try it out.
Carole
If there's a hard standing not being used, then there will be a spare hookup.
Presumably the hookups are associated with the hard standings.
QuotePresumably the hookups are associated with the hard standings.
What she said to me was that hard standings have priority for Hook ups, if there are any left over the tents can use them.
I think we should see when we get down there as what she told me and what she told Mike doesn't match unless she's had some late bookings. But can't imagine any-one other than people like us wanting to camp this time of the year!!!
Otherwise perhaps those who have got hook up can let us plug something in if necessary. My 2 DSLR batteries only seem to be enough for a few hours, so if by any miracle, we get two clear nights they'll need re-charging. As it's cold I'm not too worried about using the camping fridge.
Carole
If I remember rightly she said there were 8 hook-ups and only 3 of those were for tents. I might have got that wrong though.

It's so long since I went to DSC (Feb 2009) that I can't find half my stuff.
So far, can't find:

hose that connects the cooker to the Gaz,
new ground sheet
hook up!!!
Or the new stand I bought to put the cooker on.
Good job I started looking early!!!!

My husband has been insulating the loft, and he's moved everything around, that will be fun trying to find it all!!!

As Carole has no hook up, and I was next on the list, I feel its only right that I should have first dibs, and if Carole has no tent either, then there is a motorhome or caravan which may accommodate. ;)

Bit presumptious, but just trying to work out how much food to bring down. Are we having a "camp/communal meal" at all, or is that no longer done (I've not been to DSC for a while)?
CArole
I don't think we've had a "proper" communal meal since the rats ate the communal tent - I have missed a few DSCs though
Haven't included impromptu BBQs or fry ups
Bit risky planning for one also with the weather being a bit iffy at the moment. :(
You will have no problems with food going off when the air temperature is colder than your fridge anyway ;)
We haven't done a communal meal for a little while. Simply because there were too many people coming down, eating the meal, but not contributing anything so it was stopped. I'm more than happy to cook a communal pot but I'm not prepared to pay for freeloaders out of my own pocket.
As Mick says, we really need a communal tent to do a communal meal. I do have one but as my trailer is off the road at the moment I won't really have room to bring two tents. If anyone else is prepared to bring it down then fine. However, we would need to all chip in to pay the costs. As it is a winter DSC and as turnout will be lower than usual (I can see some of the 9 confirmed blowing out closer to the time) I don't think it's worth paying for it for this one.
QuoteI'm not prepared to pay for freeloaders out of my own pocket.
and quite right too.
I've seen some weather reports.
Sky text said:
sunny Friday, part cloud saturday, sunny on Sunday.
Also http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=edenbridge&wuSelect=WEATHER
Although BBC weather seemd to show more cloud.
Carole
Looks like Saturday might give at least some observing/imaging.
Mike, I cannot believe some people do not contribute towards your meals, who do they think pays for it all!!
Do you have to have a special connector for hookups? I only want to plug my fanheater & hairdryer in, do not want to deprive someone if they want one for all manner of things!
Who will have the padlock for those there early?
Don't want to turn up early & wait 3 hours to get in
Unfortunately there were quite a few people who ate it, but did not pay. It's pretty expensive to buy that much ingredients to cook for 15-20 people and it was pretty common that between 25 - 50% of people eating it were not paying. In the end I just gave up and stopped doing it.
Can't believe there are so many ponces around!
Quote from: Fay on Feb 17, 2010, 11:08:42Do you have to have a special connector for hookups?
Yes it is a specific hook-up...
You'll also need one of these if you don't have a caravan..
You need to buy them from camping or caravan suppliers. There are more than enough people with hook-ups this weekend so I am sure if you just bring an extension lead they will let you use it if you chip in for the costs if you don't have a hook-up cable.
I will have the code tomorrow and will PM it to all those who have said they are coming (note that not all of those 9 people have made themselves known yet so if you don't do that you won't get the code).
But who has the padlock?
I am preparing to come but not if weather too bad, but if I do not come I will visit on saturday. I have been looking forward to it, so will do my best
The padlock is on the gate. You need a code to open it and get in/out.
oh ok
Mike,
Do you want a couple of bag of that chicken tikka that I done on the BBQ at Blacklands, then all that would be needed was a man's sauce, a woman's sauce,(even though the chicken itself may be spicy) and rice.
By the way no-one paid me for that BBQ, which didn't really bother me, as the kebabs and chicken were 3 weeks out of date anyway. :cheesy:
Tony G
PS..........................Only joking about the meat being out of date, in case anyone was ill afterwards, and couldn't work out from where. ;)
Hi Mike,
Just to Clarify:
I offered to pay separately for food at one of my first DSC and you said it came out of the fee that we paid per night. Surely any "day trippers" will have paid the "day visitor" price. I am just wondering if the meal was included in the daily price how any-one managed to eat and not pay. Or were there people who came for the Day who didn't pay?
If we had to pay anything on top of this for food, then I must be one of the people who hasn't paid, in which case it was under a misunderstanding. I certainly wouldn't have done that intentionally.
If I was one of those people then I would like to re-imburse you.
Carole
QuoteIf I was one of those people then I would like to re-imburse you
Yes Carole, you was :-?
But, if you give me and Mike £25 each, we shall say no more about it ;)
I think one of the problems has been that day trippers have not been paying "day visitor price" or any price for that matter.
Yes I seem to remember the day fee & meal was included. It must be day/evening visitors that did not pay.
Tony, i don't like to think you were not paid for the bar b q?
QuoteYes Carole, you was
#
Don't joke Mick as I won't know whether to believe you or not.
Mike seriously if I was one of the people who did not pay (albeit unintentionally), then please tell me.
Carole
Fay,
I was only joking, I didn't expect anything in return,(except complaints about food poisoning) plus loads of people contributed by donating food for me to cook over the baking hot BBQ, while they bloody strolled around chatting with their drinks in their hands, demanding for me to hurry up with their chipolatas and chicken, and 'why did he get his first' arguements ringing in my ears.
But for the first time in ages, I felt part of the society, even though it was only to do the catering, but it was the best 4 hours non stop cooking, that I have ever enjoyed.
So really, what I'm saying is thank you for letting me have a glimpse of the way that you at the society live, and hope one day I can do it again.
Until then. ;)
Tony G

I think we should have a BBQathon then we could have bets on how long it takes Tony to collapse from heat exhaustion

Look Fay, this is what's next to the field.
http://www.haywaggon.com/accommodation.htm (http://www.haywaggon.com/accommodation.htm)
:D
Tony G
Carole,
After a while we did decide to use the fee (at Tuesnoad) to cover the cost of the food, mainly as Tuesnoad only charged us £100 no matter how many peopel turned up and therefore we usually made a little bit of profit for the society. It was, as Mick pointed out, mainly those that popped down for the night, ate the food, then buggered off without contributing that was the issue.
Obviously we can't take the cost of the food out of the fee now we are no logner usuing Tuesnoad as we now simply pay whatever the nightly charge is for the campsite and we are no longer making a profit.

Looks like the Meal is sorted then for saturday night. :D
What time are people getting down there tomorrow? I need to let the owner know the time the earliest person will be there as she wants to send a guy down to show us where to camp.
The field has got a lot of "marshy" areas apparently and she does NOT want cars driving on the grass. Also, for your own sake, you might get stuck. There is however no need to drive on the grass as gravel tracks run through the field. So, what the owner wants is for you to drive down a gravel track and leave your car on it, pitching your tent up beside your car on the grass. That way you can have your car right next to your tent but there is no need to drive onto the grass which will churn it up (no doughnuts please Chris).
Would it be better to get a phone number and ring up when close ?
Guessing times of arrival will be a vague
